Set to kick off tonight at 17:00, Georgia will greet Austria at “Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena” from Tbilisi, where the visitors are poised to start their new campaign with a fresh win.
Georgia presents itself as the underdog in this home fixture, as they obviously lack the experience and quality of their combatants. The Georgian national side does not have too big of an impact as far as worldwide football is concerned. They failed so far to qualify to any final tournament, in their previous campaign, finishing on the 5th position in a tough group with Germany, Poland, Ireland, Scotland and Gibraltar. Against these oppositions, they only succeeded in acquiring 9 points out of 10 games. Georgia is coming into this game after perhaps one of its more remarkable results in history, a 1-0 victory over Spain in a friendly game that took place 3 months ago.
Austria is the undoubted favorite at winning this clash, according to the bookmakers, as they have depth, quality and much more experience. In their previous qualifying campaign, the Austriacs had a smooth sail in a group alongside Sweden, Russia, Montenegro, Liechtenstein and Moldova, finishing on the first position. They were therefore headed straight to France without the playoff trouble, but unfortunately for them, they proved quite unprepared, obtaining a single point from a group with Portugal, Hungary and Iceland. As far as away games are concerned, Marcel Koller’s team has outdone itself in the past couple of years with surprising victories, currently having a 7 game winning streak away from home.
Group D is anything but easy, as there are also teams like Ireland, Wales and also Serbia who are fighting for the direct place that leads to Russia. The side coached by Marcel Koller is very aware of the fact that they cannot drop any points tonight as they are probably facing the weakest opponent in the group.
